At St Mary’s we have our own kitchen and Mrs Scurll, our cook, provides delicious meals at lunchtime which meet the Government nutritional standards. We also offer filled baguettes as a sandwich option which is very popular, especially in the summer time. Children can eat their school dinner in the hall or outside if they prefer. The Friends of St Mary’s have provided us with a super set of café-style furniture.
All children in foundation stage, Year 1 and Year 2 receive a free school meal and it is expected that they will have a school meal every day.
Once children reach Year 3, they may bring a packed lunch if they wish but this must be healthy. No sweets or crisps are allowed. Our school ‘packed lunch’ baguette is exceedingly popular and we encourage this rather than bringing in a packed lunch. If your child brings a packed lunch to school please ensure their packed lunch box/bag is named Water is available at school so there is no need to pack a drink. Please do not pack hot food since there is a scald risk. Straws and spoons should be sent when necessary.
Payment for school dinners can be made online using School Gateway. This is a secure site that uses the same level of security as the leading banks. You are only charged for the meals your child has taken with any balances carrying forward to future weeks/months.
If you do not want to use the online payments system please send cash or cheques in a sealed
envelope labelled with name, class, amount, and days staying with your child on a Monday morning
for the whole week. Mrs Bottomley is our Dinner Money Clerk. Correct labelling is essential, since
the envelopes are opened and sorted away from the classrooms and the lessons must not be
interrupted by queries about school meals information. Cheques should be made payable to St
Mary’s C E Primary School. School meals are to be paid for in advance and may be obtained free of charge under certain circumstances. If you think you may be entitled to free school meals, call the council to check on 887700 or call in at one of the Customer Service Centres. This could save you a lot of money and it also means that the school receives additional money to support your child too, called Pupil Premium.
At lunchtime, children are supervised by the Senior Midday Supervisor, Mrs Todd, and a team of Midday Supervisory Assistants. Teaching staff are not available over lunch. We expect that the children who start school will be able to use a knife, fork and spoon correctly and that all children have good table manners. Our expectations of behaviour and manners are exactly
the same at lunchtime as at other times in school. All children should behave at all times, being
courteous and respectful to the lunchtime staff and to each other.
